This spring, I interned at W. W. Norton as a Marketing and Editorial Intern in their Countryman imprint! It was such a great experience and I learned a lot.
I worked with great people, including the Countryman team in the Countryman Corner, and the other interns at the Intern Station. Every one of these people taught me something and I loved learning about their backgrounds and getting to know them. I’ve never had an in-office position before, and it was great to experience that and connect with my coworkers on a deeper level.
I worked with a variety of manuscripts and already published books, including WHAT DO I DO WITH MY BABY ALL DAY, THE RAMADAN COOKBOOK, SUGAR TACO, THE WANDERERS JOURNAL, HIKING WOMEN, ASK QUESTIONS SAVE MONEY MAKE MORE, SAM THE COOKING GUY AND THE HOLY GRILL, A HOUSE RESTORED, FORAGED AND GROWN, MISUNDERSTOOD VEGETABLES, THOUGHTFUL COOKING, BOHEME COOKING, RATTLED, DO JUST ONE THING, THE COCKTAIL PARLOR, BREAD & ROSES, NECROMUNCHICON, THE ART OF TRAINING YOUR DOG, GIVE MY SWISS CHARDS TO BROADWAY, RECIPETIN EATS DINNER, EAT & FLOURISH, IT’S A GOOD DAY TO CHANGE THE WORLD, THE IMMUNITY SOLUTION, FIRST BITES, MY VERMONT TABLE, INDIA EXPRESS, FEED THE BABY, CHRONIC PAIN RESET, RECIPES FOR MURDER, SOAP & SOUL, KING ARTHUR BAKING SCHOOL, THE COOK AND THE RABBI, CRAVE, and EVERY COCKTAIL HAS A TWIST.
I had the opportunity to review proposals, write readers reports, write review/acquisition/rejection letters, sit in on acquisition and marketing meetings and edit manuscripts. I also contacted influencers to offer ARCs, maintained contact sheets, and sent ARCs and bookstore mailings. I communicated with authors, agents and influencers, as well as with other departments.
I learned a lot about the publishing industry, thanks to my tasks, and Norton’s intern education sessions. I feel a lot more confident in my skills and qualifications, and I believe I’ll be an even stronger asset to the next team I’m a part of!
I’m going to miss this era of my life, but I’m so excited to see where the future takes me. Thank you W. W. Norton for this amazing opportunity!
